Taking Care of Your Grass in the Summer

July 21, 2025
A hat is sitting on the back of a lawn mower.

Summer is the season when your lawn gets the most attention—and the most stress. With soaring temperatures, intense sunlight, and increased foot traffic, your grass needs extra care to stay green, healthy, and beautiful. Here’s your go-to guide for summer lawn care to help your turf survive and thrive through the heat.

1. Water Deeply, Not Frequently

During hot summer months, your grass needs about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week, including rainfall. Instead of watering a little every day, water deeply 2–3 times per week to encourage deeper root growth. The best time to water is early in the morning, before 10 a.m., to minimize evaporation and fungal growth.

2. Raise Your Mower Blades

Taller grass provides shade for the soil, reducing evaporation and protecting roots from heat. Raise your mower height to 3–4 inches depending on your grass type. This not only helps conserve moisture but also crowds out weeds naturally.

3. Don’t Over-Fertilize

Too much fertilizer in summer can stress your grass and burn the lawn. If your lawn is healthy, skip fertilizing until fall. If needed, use a slow-release or organic fertilizer and water it in well to prevent scorching.

4. Mow with Sharp Blades

A dull mower blade tears the grass, leaving jagged edges that turn brown and make the lawn vulnerable to disease. Sharpen your mower blades regularly to ensure a clean cut and a cleaner look.

5. Control Weeds

Weeds love summer heat, but aggressive weed killers can damage stressed grass. Spot-treat weeds by hand or with a gentle herbicide, and always read the label before applying. The best defense against weeds? A thick, healthy lawn.

6. Reduce Foot Traffic

Too much activity on your lawn during extreme heat can cause soil compaction and damage turf. If possible, create designated paths or lay stepping stones in high-traffic areas to protect the grass.

7. Watch for Pests and Disease

Hot, humid weather can lead to lawn pests and fungal diseases. Keep an eye out for brown patches, thinning grass, or strange discoloration. If you spot a problem, act quickly—early treatment can save your lawn from serious damage.

Summer doesn’t have to mean brown, brittle grass. With the right watering schedule, mowing habits, and a little attention to detail, your lawn can remain lush and inviting all season long.
